The Litribune
disseminating hope and creative diversityWriting Workshops
One of the most integral functions of the Litribune is our Writing Workshops. We’ve recently teamed up with Literary Life Bookstore in Grand Rapids to offer expanded programming.
Our workshops are a public forum for artists to get immediate feedback and criticism on their work, volunteer their time to critiquing others’ works, and get connected with other artists in their community.
Our workshops are held at Editors houses to stay aligned with our vision of an informal, comfortable setting for Workshops. Creative writing can be raw, obscene, intimate, or riot worthy. We believe it’s important to the success & functioning of a Workshop that all participants feel comfortable.
There is a definite structure and process to our workshops, but with minimal facilitation. Really, the only rule is respect.

Workshop Structure:
If you are bringing work to share, it really helps if you can email a copy to the Litribune or bring hard copies. That way, everyone can read your work rather than just hear it, and provide better critique.
The author will read his piece aloud, and usually be asked to read it one more time for the group.
The other attending participants will go around the circle and provide positive and critical feedback.
After everyone has had a turn to give feedback, the author will have a chance to make any rebuttal or noteworthy comments about the work.
We encourage participants to disagree with one another on their views of the presented work. This kind of discussion is where the learning really takes place.
Sometimes we do warm-up exercises, such as a ten-minute writing prompt.
We like it when you bring a book of poetry you’ve been reading and share one at the beginning of the session.
